How’s this for a reputation: Viridiana won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, was banned in its home country and condemned by the Vatican for indecency upon its initial release, and was named the greatest Spanish film of all time in 2016. But you’d expect no less from a provocateur like Luis Buñuel, whose movies love to thumb their nose at social conventions, authority figures, and matters of good taste. Here, he presents us with the story of nun-in-training Viridiana (Silvia Pinal), who finds her faith tested by sexual perversions, disturbed relatives, and a group of beggars eager to commit blasphemy.
