Located on Los Angeles’ historic Miracle Mile since 1965, Craft Contemporary reveals the potential of craft to educate, captivate, provoke, and empower.

tierra (May 31 - October 25)

It names what is beneath, what is held, what is returned to. tierra expands and contracts. It burrows under fingernails, lingers in the air, settles in memories. It is both earth and land, but it is also ground to stand on, dirt to be worked, homeland carried across distances, and sediment accumulated through time. It is material, archive, and an ancestor. Each meaning layered over and under the other.

Part of Craft Contemporary’s Clay Biennial series, tierra marks a reconsideration of the biennial’s conceptual and material parameters. This iteration expands its focus beyond ceramic and clay as a singular medium to encompass broader practices grounded in land and earth. Across the practices presented, earth-based materials appear not only as matter but as carriers of relation that are marked by touch, shaped by labor, and mended through care. These materials are approached as holders of cultural memory and as sites where knowledge is formed through making, tending, and embodied practice. Rather than centering medium alone, the exhibition attends to the ways artists work with and through earth, not only as a material, but as a relation.

Maker-in-Residence featuring Piece by Piece and Vince Skelly

Craft Contemporary is pleased to announce its new Maker-in-Residence program with Los Angeles–based non-profit organization Piece by Piece and Southern California artist and sculptor Vince Skelly. Visitors will be able to interact, ask, and sometimes collaborate with the makers as they experiment with materials and processes, pushing the boundaries of contemporary craft. The residency will challenge the makers to transform the museum’s second floor into a dynamic and immersive workspace.

Piece by Piece artists will invite museum visitors to engage directly with them as they create mosaic artworks using both new and repurposed materials. Through this practice, visitors can explore a variety of mosaic techniques, learn about the art form’s cultural and personal significance, and participate in the transformation of individual pieces into larger works that reflect community narratives. From November 15, 2025 through February 8, 2026, Piece by Piece artists will be on-site Thursday mornings and Saturday afternoons offering a unique opportunity to experience community-based craft making in action.

From February 11, 2025 through May 10, 2026, artist Vince Skelly will transform the gallery space into a recreation of his studio where wood-working tools, sketches, and wood works will be on display. Vince Skelly – Source Material is an experimental approach to the artist’s creative process in which visitors will gain insights into how he explores the intersection of form, function, and collective memory through his sculptural practice. Through the power of craft, the Maker-in-Residence program is designed to invite the public to engage directly with the process of making, offering a rare opportunity to witness and participate in contemporary craft in action.

Material Curiosity by Design: Evelyn & Jerome Ackerman

Material Curiosity by Design: Evelyn & Jerome Ackerman with Porfirio Gutiérrez, Jolie Ngo, & Vince Skelly features the vibrant designs of Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman in dialogue with works by contemporary artists Porfirio Gutiérrez, Jolie Ngo, and Vince Skelly. Showcasing ceramic, textile, mosaic, wood, and metal, the exhibition sparks a dynamic conversation about materials, innovation, and craft.

Known for their colorful, playful, and optimistic designs, Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman partnered for decades to bring decorative objects into homes across the United States. Born and trained in Detroit, Michigan, the Ackermans moved to Los Angeles, California, in the early 1950s, where they set up their studio and shop. Popular press and exhibitions championed their work as a vivid embodiment of midcentury California style.
