John, Paul, George, Ringo, and Paul’s grandfather bring Beatlemania to the big screen in Richard Lester’s 1964 pop fantasia A Hard Day’s Night. More than a concert film or jukebox musical, Lester’s revolutionary, freewheeling masterpiece captures the swinging ’60s sensibility with an infectious, hilarious, and toe-tapping adventure. A snapshot of the Beatles when they were “bigger than Jesus,” A Hard Day’s Night is a post-modern delight that introduced the world to a new kind of pop star, one that would not be defined by genre or haircuts. The band’s lightning-quick wits continue to win over crowds with their irreverent sense of humor and, yes, indelible songs. Don’t get stuck trying to watch this one at home, with a pathetic soundbar struggling to keep up with Ringo’s beat.
